Is the Hawthorne Yard still operating? Which outbound manifest CN trains still originate or work there? In the past the Waterloo daily train went through there. Does it still work there? Is there a reliable time to see the westbound there? Nick Goedecke posted Glenn Yard Chicago August Carlisle Kelly if you could see behind engine 11 you would see the Plug equipment--it was brought to Glenn daily for servicing then back to Union Station for the trip back to Joliet.
The engine would return to Glenn with a switchman from Glenn Yard and the Plugs train crew would remain downtown all day--they had second jobs in Chicago--usually as runners at the Chicago Board of Trade. The sights were noteworthy enough that some fans in my circle were known to refer to it as "the Glenn Yard Museum. This shot was taken by an unknown photographer on April 17, I never made it to Glenn that many times from my home in northwest suburban Park Ridge, but it was definitely a memorable place on my occasional visits.
The west side has been totally obliterated by the Dan Ryan Expressway. Only some of the NYC yard has been redeveloped. You can still see bridges across 43rd Street and ballast trails from the additional source listed below.
Take your pick! All of the trains heading into and out of Chicago need someplace to go or start out of. There are over 40 yards currently in and around Chicago, and in the past, there were well over 70! This is a VERY large page, as there are 81 yards listed. Please be patient.
If you are using a dial up connection, go have lunch or dinner :- Notes about locations: Distances and directions are from the middle of "the loop". Just keep in mind while you're running around railfanning, that the railroads, especially today, really frown on trespassing onto their property for picture taking. The new double wye will be east of the IC, I made a typo regarding that, my bad.
The double wye will start near where the CN mainline goes over Main Street, and will come into the J mainline east of the Main Street crossing on that line.
The present connection that allows trains going west onto the J to get onto the IC going south will remain in place. Of interest in the new plans is that a railroad park is proposed to be built along the double wye about mid-way between the J and IC mainlines.
That will provide a legal viewing area of trains going up and down the wye. EJE The wye will not interfere with Metra operations in any way, the only thing that will have to be reconfigured from Metra's standpoint is the parking lot for the Matteson station.
Wait so is this double wye going to be in the northeast or southeast quadrant of the J and IC intersection at Matteson? It was double track back in the day so the bridge is double wide, it's just that the second track was removed who knows how long ago. Our community is FREE to join. Order Ascending Order Descending. Member since November posts. Hawthorne Yard - Originates a pair of Iowa division trains each day, otherwise strictly local traffic 3. Kirk - primary yard for general freight from all points east 5. Joliet - primary yard for general freight from all points west including most of the stuff on the Iowa division 6. Clearing - does CN have any trains that go direct to clearing?
Am I missing any yards? So a few follow up questions: 1. Even though Joliet is not as of now the yard for all westbound points, is that the plan? Member since May From: Valparaiso, In 5, posts. There no doubt are locals out of Kirk, but am not sure about these. That is it.
